Technically designed to reduce the amount of noise generated by wind (or breath) being picked up by a microphone and amplified. These are ideal when microphones are used outside in an unsheltered spot such as a music festival or fete. 

Multi coloured windshields are also very useful to a sound engineer who wishes to be able to identify an individual vocal microphone at a glance. For example when mixing a group of vocalists / backing singers. Ideal for hygiene reasons at a karaoke where there are multiple users of a microphone.
